Jonathan D. Licht, M.D., and Mingyi Xie, Ph.D., received a five-year $2.5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to study gene regulation in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Carma Bylund, Ph.D., Martina Murphy, M.D., and Stephanie Staras, Ph.D., received a grant from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to study how implementing a new training curriculum can enhance oncology fellows’ skills in communicating about cancer clinical trials.

Margaret “Peggy” Wallace, Ph.D., received the Friedrich von Recklinghausen Award from the Children’s Tumor Foundation in recognition of her significant contributions to neurofibromatosis research. She received the award at the foundation’s annual global conference this summer in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Bruno Hochhegger, M.D., Ph.D., was named the 2023 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) William R. Eyler Editorial Fellow. The fellowship provides an opportunity for mid-career radiologists to further their experience in radiologic journalism by working with RSNA journal editors and publications staff.

Young-Rock Hong, Ph.D., received a grant from the UF College of Public Health and Health Professions Research Innovation Fund. The grant will support Hong’s development of a dataset to be used in studies of bariatric weight loss surgery and its impact on cancer risk and other health outcomes.

Brian Law, Ph.D., will be honored at UF Innovate’s 6th Annual Standing InnOvation event on Oct. 18. Standing InnOvation honors innovators who have disclosed, licensed or optioned a technology in the most recent fiscal year and first year innovators who have received an issued U.S. patent.

In addition, he received a two-year $400,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute for a study, titled “HER1-3 and Death Receptor protein folding as therapeutic vulnerabilities.”

Chengguo Xing, Ph.D., and Ramzi Salloum, Ph.D., received a three-year $1.5 million award from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health for a study, titled “The potential of kava in enabling tobacco cessation – its holistic effects in managing stress and insomnia associated with abstinence.”

Jason Butler, Ph.D., received a four-year award from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute for a study, titled “Preserving bone marrow niche integrity and function to rejuvenate aged hematopoietic stem cells.”

Catherine Flores, Ph.D., received a two-year grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for a study, titled “Developmentally regulated antigens for immunologic targeting of pediatric brain tumors.”

Yi Guo, Ph.D., received a two-year $200,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to identify geographic hotspots of low adherence to lung cancer screening in veterans.

Matthew Sarkisian, Ph.D., received a two-year $419,375 grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to study how to advance immunotherapy approaches to treat glioblastoma, the most aggressive malignant brain tumor in humans.

Fan Zhang, Ph.D., participated in the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer Sparkathon 2.0 Accelerator class. The Sparkathon program aims to foster leadership development, collaborations and scientific exchange among early career investigators who are emerging leaders in the field of cancer immunotherapy.
